We’re all agreed that our homes are our pride and joy, right? On a more practical level, they’re also our most expensive investments. So, of course, we want to look after them. It’s for this reason that we call in the professionals and spend even more money getting them up to scratch.
But, if we don’t take our time, those professionals could do more damage than good. Though few homeowners like to think about it, dodgy tradespeople are a real risk. In extreme cases, they can disrupt your life. To stop that from happening, know how to opt for workers you can trust. Whether you’re looking for a roofing company you can rely on, or an electrician who puts you at ease, the search is much the same. And, that’s what we’re going to look at here.
Do Your Research
First, do your research. The market is overrun with traders offering every service, so it’ll be difficult to separate the good from the bad. But, the internet makes it easier than ever to find out everything you need to know. Start by gathering a list of potential companies. Then, research each in more detail. Reviews online are probably your best bet. Bear in mind that it’s worth looking for reviews on websites unrelated to the company itself. That’s the best way to get an unbiased idea.
It’s also worth looking at each tradesperson’s portfolio. Most websites should include examples of previous work. This will help you gain an idea of whether they could offer what you’re after. Besides which, you can be sure something dodgy is afoot if a company doesn’t provide examples.
Get A Few Quotes
Once you’ve narrowed things down, it’s time to get quotes from a few of the companies you’re considering. We’re all busy, and too often we settle for the first quote we receive. After all, no one likes having strangers in their home. The faster you get it over with, the better, right? No! In fact, settling for your first quote is a massive mistake. There’s more than one type of dodgy dealing in these trades, and overcharging is as bad as doing a terrible job. Getting at least three quotes will ensure you have some idea of how much the work will cost. And, you could always use the quotes against each other to get the best deal.
Understand And Oversee Work
Many homeowners get stung because they don’t understand work being done. As such, they’re unable to spot the difference between a quick fix and a proper job. To avoid this, make sure you know what’s being done and why. Make sure, too, to oversee the work. That’s not to say you need to become a client from hell. But, pop in at least every hour or so under the pretense of offering workers a drink, or something like that. Take a quick look around when you do. It should be fairly obvious whether they’re wasting time or creating your dream home.
