When making pasta, most of us take the easy route by buying a packet of spaghetti and a jar of pasta sauce. Going home-made all the way is far too time-consuming for the majority of us. However, there’s no denying how much tastier a rustic Italian dish tastes. Such a home-made meal is perfect for a dinner party or a weekend meal in which you may want to treat yourself. For those that are up to the challenge, here are some tips for crafting a truly rustic Italian meal.
Make your own sauce
Replacing those jars with a homemade sauce will instantly boost the taste and give you more nutritional value (those jars often have more sugar and les vitamins). There are all kinds of sauces that can be looked up online, but most people will be after a basic Bolognese sauce. For a serving of four, you’ll need 1 can of chopped tomatoes, 1 onion, 1 crushed clove of garlic, 1 teaspoon of sugar, 1 teaspoon of olive oil and 1 tablespoon of tomato puree. Feel free to also add pepper, mushrooms, mixed herbs, red wine, pepper, beef stock and even ketchup if you desire.
Grind your own meat
Why settle for supermarket burger when you can easily create your own? All you need is a steak and a meat grinder. Shop around online for the best meat grinder for your money – you don’t anything too cheap that could be temperamental but similarly don’t want something top end designed for a restaurant. We recommend cutting up a steak into cubes to make grinding easier. With a grinder you have the freedom to choose any meat you like whether it be beef, lamb or even venison.
Press your own pasta
Making your own pasta is fiddly work, but it’s certain to be far tastier. Pasta is basically just flour and eggs mixed until they become a dough. Whisk the mixture in a container and then lay out the dough and knead it until it reaches the right texture. You can then begin to shape your pasta however you desire. For flattening out pasta, consider using a rolling pin, or even better a pasta rolling machine. These pasta machines can vary in price. Ravioli wheels meanwhile can be used for creating ravioli.
Bake your own bread
While you’re at it, you may as well attempt to make your own bread. For this you’ll need 7 cups of flour, 3 cups of water, 1 teaspoon of white sugar, 1 tablespoon of salt and 1 tablespoon of dry yeast. Knead this into a dough and then bake in the oven until brown. It’s worth using foil to stop your bread sticking. Once you’ve nailed bread-making, you may even want to experiment and make your own cheesy bread or even garlic bread. This recipe can also be used to make pizza bases just (like-a mama used to make!).
