Coffee is delicious.
Coffee is the elixir of life– or so it feels like when you’re up at 6am and trying to exist on three hours sleep, anyway.
Coffee is wonderful.
The above are true; undeniable. Coffee has a unique place in culture. It’s a beverage that oozes sophistication, the image of steamed coffee houses where friends meet up for a chat, or the one bright spot on an otherwise bleak morning. It’s a drink that makes you feel like an adult.
It’s at this point you might be expecting a but, or — as Rachel from Friends once put it, the “fancy but” of a however — and then paragraphs on how evil coffee really is, and how you should quit it immediately. That’s not going to happen. Coffee is good for you; there’s nothing inherently wrong with drinking it.
However (sorry!), that doesn’t mean there aren’t consequences to drinking coffee. If you’re going to drink a couple of cups a day for the rest of your life, don’t you think it makes sense to consider how your body might be reacting to something that features so prolifically in your diet?

Coffee… Can Harm Your Stomach Acid
Did you know that the overproduction of stomach acid — often referred to as acid reflux — is thought to relate to low levels of stomach acid? It’s a compensation thing; our stomachs panic if they don’t think they have sufficient acid to digest flood, so acid floods through our GI system, going a little overboard and causing unpleasant symptoms.
Coffee and stomach acid don’t mix well; the caffeine in coffee has an exacerbating effect. This could potentially get worse over time, causing your stomach to continually over-produce acid, and you to experience health problems including ulcers as a result. The best way to prevent this is to have a week or two off coffee every six months, just to give your stomach time to adjust.
So while coffee isn’t the great evil it is sometimes described to be, it’s not without its side effects. Take note of the points above and you can ensure you don’t have to suffer through them; you can keep enjoying your morning Joe without any discomfort or staining whatsoever.
