From the moment we start school, we wish we could grow up and be the adult of the house. Looking around you as a child, adults have it made, don’t they? They get to do what they want, when they want, and they don’t seem to need permission from anyone. The trouble is, it’s not until you spend your childhood wishing it away and you’re an adult that you realise it’s not all it’s cracked up to be.
Adulthood comes with a different set of chores to childhood. You may have resented doing the yard work for pocket money from your Mom, but at least as a child someone paid you to do it. As an adult, it’s either clear the yard or live somewhere that looks like a tip – and no one pays you for it. Instead, you pay someone else to do it for you! Adulthood comes with independence from parents, but it comes with other trappings that no one wants to do. So, what are the top chores in adulthood that no one wants?
- Laundry. There is not one adult out there that enjoys laundry. It’s not so much the getting it all in the washer for it to be cleaned, but once it’s dried, you have to then put it all back in the cupboards. It can feel like the most fruitless task in the world, especially as most of the clothes end up back in the wash basket the same week!
- Packing. Whether it’s for a holiday or a house move, no one enjoys packing. Thankfully, other forward-thinking adults have set up companies that can help with that, so hit up movebuddies.com for more. Your childhood can seem so much simpler when a home is packed and moved around you rather than you being the one to pay for and pack all the boxes!
- Cooking. Unless you enjoy cooking, it’s one of the least enjoyed household jobs. There’s something delicious about having someone else – especially your Mom – cook for you and bring it to you at the table. This is the reason adults love to eat out: no cooking, no clearing away and a hot meal with no effort. Unfortunately, that costs money, so learning to cook is the only option.
- Paying Bills. Did you ever grow up daydreaming about the house you may have one day? How about the interior design you pictured? Well, as an adult, you get to decorate your home any way you want to. Unfortunately, you also have to pay for it! Going out to work for 8 hours a day can feel horrendous when all you want to do is stay at home, and once you get your paycheck, you get to wave it goodbye on utilities, the mortgage and groceries.
The moral of the story? Growing up isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, but you do get to buy shoes, fall in love and live without rules. Aside from the chores you now have to do, it’s not without its perks!
