The folks at Oliver’s Travels asked me to share one of my funniest trip memories.
Did you ever have something awful happen and think someday I will look back and laugh about this? Yeah, me too. Imagine a whole vacation like this. Luckily there has been many chances to laugh about it ever since. Let me tell you about my vacation from hell.
It was 9 years ago, and I remember it all like it was yesterday. My friend Lisa and I decided we needed a break from reality so we thought it would be really fun to point to a spot on the us map. Wherever we pointed would be where we vacationed. She closed her eyes and pointed. We then looked the town up to see what was around. It didn’t take long to realize that there was not much around. Lucky for us they did have a hotel in town, one hotel. We booked our vacation and was on our way.
We had to make special arrangements as she was in a wheelchair, no big deal we had traveled many places together in the past. We arrived at the airport and things went downhill from their. When it was time to board the plane Lisa climbed into the special lift chair and told the attendant to take good care of her chair. After a promise that it would be ready and waiting for her when we landed.
Three very turbulent hours later we arrived at the airport. After all others left the plane they brought Lisa the lift chair. We left the plane and waited on the ground for them to unload the chair. Suddenly the flight attendant came and told us they had misplaced the wheelchair and were trying to locate it. After a half hour they located it, back at the airport we had departed from, but they had one we could use until the following day. no big deal.
in the airport they brought the wheelchair. As wide as it was we could have both easily sat in it. Oh well it was only for a night. Next to grab the car and go. We got to the car rental booth and was informed there had been a mistake and there was no car available, but they had called a taxi to take us to the hotel. They would deliver one the next day with the wheelchair.
I pushed her in the chair to the taxi stand, as the chair was so wide she couldn’t reach to push herself. We got her in the car and the driver grabbed her chair to place it in the trunk. One problem, they place a bar across the chair so it doesn’t fold to deter wheelchair thieves. The chair ended up strapped down with the trunk left open. We then spent 1 1/2 hours in a taxi that smelled like dirty socks and cigarettes.
We were exhausted and couldn’t wait to rest. The Hotel was just what you would expect in a small town in the middle of no where, tiny and outdated. The only thing the place had going for it was the friendly person at the desk. After telling her of our day’s adventures she check us in and gave us the room key.
I wheeled my exhausted friend down the hall and opened the door. It was then that we discovered that the chair would not fit though the door, She tried to push it through anyway and became stuck. After we finally got her free, I went to the desk and asked to borrow the computer chair. We finally made it in the room. Worn, ugly, brown hotel bedspreads and lumpy pillows never looked so good. We hit the pillows and was fast asleep, only to be woke up every 1/2 hour by the rumbling of old water pipes. Called the front desk to see about moving rooms and was informed that all the rooms on the first floor sounded the same.
The following morning we had made the decision to cut our stay short. When we went to the desk and told the young lady our decision. When we asked her to call a taxi she told us there were none any closer then the airport, but if we wanted she would take us when she got of her shift. She said she had to call the airport though, to make sure they didn’t bring Lisa’s chair to the motel and to inform them they would have to come pick up the one they lent her. After she got off the phone she informed us that there was two reasons why she couldn’t bring it. Number one was that her car was tiny, and by tiny I mean I was holding luggage on the 1 1/2 hour trip back. The second reason was that her car had recently broken down on the way back from grocery shopping. It went to the garage and when she got it back the smell was breathtaking. She discovered that she forgot to grab her turkey out of the trunk. Needless to say we rode back to the airport with all windows down and our noses plugged.
It took awhile, but, we laughed about this trip ever since.
